Hello blog readers! We hope you enjoyed the weather this week just as much as we have. For this week’s blog post, we wanted to give our readers a special look into our work on the coast! This week our coastal team lived like pirates and scoped out many of the south shore’s bank swallow habitats on the water.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were all dedicated to our bank swallows, braving the wind, rain, current and sweltering heat all for our little friends on the shore. Tuesday, while determined, our staff were no match for the strong winds and currents that shook their kayaks and their will. Deciding to postpone our survey of Cow’s Head until the weather cleared up, we set our sights on Port Borden and Amherst Cove on Wednesday. We were rewarded with one of the largest bank swallow colonies on the south shore, rivalling the one in Victoria with 170 counted burrows and 40 swallows zipping around to let us know they are thriving! Seeing these birds in action is always a treat, and as our coastal supervisor Fletcher would say “it’s so special!”.
We decided to do our Thursday survey on foot, while we didn’t see any bank swallows, we were still rewarded with some very nice beach combing finds!
Friday, the coastal team joined forces with the inland team to tackle much smaller bodies of water, doing water quality testing along the south shore and wrapped up some in office data collection, putting a nice neat bow on our coastal work for this week.
Next week we set our sights on more bank swallow surveys, and some elevation surveys! We hope you enjoy your weekend and keep our beautiful south shore in your hearts!
