Salutations devoted readers.
This week provided us with a taste of summer and we here at SSWA enjoyed every second. Lighthearted laughter echoed through the trees as we continued to survey the Westmoreland river system. We also continued to steward the various parks. Interrupted by the occasional stream dunk to cool off, we tallied invasive species, planted trees and moved gravel. Furthermore, we are now consistently monitoring our fishtrap at Lords pond. Empty for most of the week we were delighted to score a small rainbow trout on friday.

Tired from last week's tree planting, we joined forces with our good friends from Stantech. Together we planted roses and bayberries in Victoria. These salt tolerant shrubs are essential to stabilize our banks and provide a buffer for our beloved coastline and our biggest bank swallow colony.
On the topic of comradery, on Thursday, we joined forces with the Kensington North Watershed Association. Together we hosted an environmental expo for the nearby elementary school. Tangled rods, scattered botchee balls and dirty fish nets were all evidence of children learning about the environment we care so deeply about.

The real highlight of the week was bird banding. On Tuesday we got our first ever recapture in one of our local swallow boxes. This is a good indicator of the efficacy of our banding program. The following day we were delighted to join in on a juvenile eagle banding. Being able to contribute to the conversation of such a staple species had us feeling truly proud.

Sunburns, bug bites, and blisters were no match for the high spirits here at SSWA this week. With our hearts full and smiles bright we hope you enjoy your weekend and we can't wait to get back to you for next week's escapades.
Love, SSWA
