New Horizons

July 17, 2026

Hello everyone!

We hope you've all been enjoying the beautiful summer weather! It was another productive week for the South Shore Watershed Association, with our crew spending plenty of time outdoors working to improve and monitor the health of our local watersheds.

We kicked off the week on Monday with stream restoration work, helping improve stream habitat for fish and other aquatic species. We also spent some time advertising our upcoming Swim for the South Shore event and reaching out to our community for sponsorships.

On Tuesday, our inland team continued stream restoration work. On the coastal side we headed out for estuary monitoring to collect important information about the health of our coastal ecosystems. Later in the day, we also searched through the milkweed plants in our pollinator gardens hoping to find monarch butterfly caterpillars.

Wednesday was another busy day in the field. As our inland team continued with stream restoration. Our coastal staff went scuba diving to check on eelgrass beds. Eelgrass plays an important role in our estuaries by providing habitat for marine life and improving water quality.

Thursday was dedicated to water quality testing across our watersheds. The team went out and took water level measurements to compare with other seasons. We also utilized a device called a YSI to measure factors such as dissolved oxygen, salinity, conductivity and others. This data is essential to ensure our streams are in good health.

We wrapped up the week on Friday with park maintenance, keeping our local parks looking their best for everyone to enjoy throughout the summer. We also took some time to maintain our chainsaws and to put up some posters for the swim.

It was another great week of teamwork and stewardship, and we're excited to continue our projects in the weeks ahead. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Love,

SSWA
